00:00 You may have seen gorgeous looking pale blue smoothies or cakes
00:03 or other yummy foods on social media lately.
00:05 They probably got that lovely hue from spirulina,
00:08 a blue green algae
00:10 that's a popular supplement to lots of trendy recipes.
00:12 And spirulina is more than just good looking.
00:14 It's got more than twice the protein per kilogram than lean B,
00:18 and a whole host of other nutrients to boot.
00:20 What's more, it could be an eco friendly way of feeding the world.
00:23 A new feasibility study suggests that Iceland,
00:26 which already farms a lot of spirulina,
00:28 could pretty easily scale up their production with major results.
00:32 In one model,
00:33 the researchers found that Iceland could make over 240,000 metric tons
00:37 of spirulina pre year,
00:38 enough to feed over 6.6 million people.
00:41 The best part?
00:41 Existing farms are powered by geothermal energy,
00:44 meaning the whole process is carbon neutral.
00:46 So it's planet powered plant protein production.
00:49 Say that five times fast.
